About

Thank you for visiting wickedforeign!  My name is Wendy and I’m a native Bostonian currently living in Zürich, Switzerland with my husband (aka Mr. wickedforeign) and our 1-year-old son.

Adventure and travel have always been a part of who I am.  As a child, I wanted to live in the jungle like Jane Goodall and as a teenager I told my advisor that I wanted to be a professional vagabond when he asked me what I wanted to do for a living.  However, my spontaneous side is well balance with my overly analytical side.  So, I’ve done my best over the years to incorporate adventure and travel into a “normal” life.

I traveled a bit as a child with annual road trips from Boston to Orlando, a few excursions to Canada, my first solo flight at age 12, and headed over to Europe for the first time during my senior year in high school.

As an adult, I’ve lived in Boston, Arizona, San Diego, Manhattan, and now Zürich.  I’ve driven across the U.S. alone, lived out of my car for a few months in California, jumped out of 2 perfectly good working airplanes in Maine, gone on several 5 day solo biking treks on Martha’s Vineyard, traveled throughout North America and Europe, and various other shenanigans that have helped me see a very small amount of this very big world.

My latest adventure is my move abroad.  A recent job promotion for my husband has brought our family to Switzerland and we are doing our darndest to travel as much as humanly possible.  We have a very young son and I am very, very pregnant with our second child but I still try to pick up and go whenever and wherever I can.

There is still a whole lot more world to be traveled and many more adventures to be had.  So I hope you’ll join me (and my family) as we become wickedforeign.

    • Hi Chelsey-
My pleasure, your site looks like fun. Oh, and those Bloody Cupcakes are calling my name. No fair teasing a pregnant woman! I’m glad you enjoy the “fenestrations” photo series. If you have any cool pics of doors or windows that you’d like to share, don’t hesitate to submit them to my photo contest. I’m always interested to see what doors and windows others have discovered in their travels. Best of luck!

  1. hey Wendy. great attitude! i love the idea of the blog and as someone living overseas right now, all this travelling will not be something that you’ll ever forget!

    • Hi Andrew-
Thanks for stopping by! Yes, we are so fortunate to have this opportunity and I intend to make the most of it. Best of luck in your medical training and come back and visit anytime.

    • I love that you just said ‘wicked’! Are you a native Bostonian as well? If not, then you get double kudos for getting the reference. I am mildly obsessed with color so I found your site really intriguing. Keep it up!

      • Not Bostonian but an enthusiastic fan of Henry James and I delight in being a European in spite of or perhaps because of being Scottish. The idea of being eternally a foreigner even when one returns to one’s own land gives a completely different perspective to everything, expands consciousness and nurtures a sense of humour. Colour reaches an aspect of ourselves that we keep protected, sometimes unnecessarily. You are welcome to visit at any time.

  2. Very cool. Have you ever watched House Hunters International on HGTV? That’s what I thought about when I read this! 🙂 Good luck with your adventure! And your growing family. By the way, thanks for stopping by my blog.

    • Hi Rick. No, I haven’t seen the show but so many people have asked me that same question. Frankly, Zurich is so expensive that no one can afford to buy homes anyway. Almost everyone lives in an apartment in the city. Thank you for your well wishing and I’m glad you enjoyed my blog. I hope to “see” you again. Have a great holiday season!

  3. hi thanks for visitng my blog at http://www.maedetera.wordpress.com and liking some of my photos….your love for travel and photography is quite inspiring…ive just been to zurich for a brief visit and drove all the way to scoul up to the border to italy and austria….you are lucky to be living in a very scenic country where nature is at its best….take care and congrats on your 2nd baby….

    • Thank you so much. I am really happy to hear that you enjoy my blog. Yes, Zurich really is quite a special place for so many reasons and I feel fortunate every day for this opportunity. If we are not careful, we just might get sucked in and never leave! Best wishes for the holidays and I hope to “see” you again.
